Catherine Low

4th Degree Black Belt, International Instructor

A brief history of your Taekwondo experience

My training began in January 1997 in Darlington, Perth Western Australia. My son joined Taekwon-Do and then I decided to join as well. Since then I have never looked back! Today Taekwon-Do remains a very important part of my life.

Where, when and with whom you began training

I returned to Australia in December of 1996 after 10 years in Japan, I was walking along Darlington Oval, in Perth and noticed a group of people in white uniforms training on the grass. I stopped to watch with my children and after the lesson we met the instructor, Senior Master Low. My son and I joined shortly after that.

Benefits you have experienced and lessons learned from your Taekwon-do training

The benefits of Taekwon-Do training go way beyond the obvious physical ones. Taekwon-Do has had a lot to do with me being more physically and emotionally grounded. It has allowed me to tap into the wisdom of my own body. I have learned that my stance in life is just as critical as my stance in Taekwon-Do. If your stance is weak then everything you do will be fundamentally flawed.

What other skills you bring to Taekwon-do that enhance your training

As an accredited Fitness Specialist, Personal Trainer, Health & Wellness Coach as well as an NLP Trainer & Master Practitioner I am able to appreciate the mind/body connection in Taekwon-Do training and philosophy. This greatly enriches my training and takes it far beyond the physical aspect of it.

Your greatest achievement in life and Taekwon-do

My family, my husband, my children – If I get that wrong, nothing else matters. As far as Taekwon-Do goes the greatest achievement is always just around the corner - the process of learning is ongoing. Having said this, I won a Silver Medal in patterns at the World Championships in Bulgaria in 2006 and I really enjoyed being one of the Coaches for the World Championship team in Slovenia in 2007. In my Taekwon-Do journey I am continually discovering what doesn’t work. And occasionally I experience a moment where everything comes together perfectly!

Your vision for your future with regards to Taekwon-Do and life in general

Happiness and good health for my family, to expand my coaching practice, write a book or two, continue delivering seminars, workshops and public speaking globally in the personal development arena. My vision for Taekwon-Do is to create a global network of Black Belt women dedicated to the development of opportunities for women in Taekwon-Do, not only in leadership but also as umpires, coaches, instructors and motivators. To utilize the principles and theories of Taekwon-Do to create success in other areas of life, both professional and personal.
